Bailey36, I have never tried to build from the bottom up. Do you have a simple pattern I could look at? I was wondering if that was possible, figured you would be just decreasing instead of increasing, but when I got to the top my brain would shut down

They do not take long to do. My husband is dying from cancer, so we spent a lot of time at the UW Carbone Cancer Center. This is where everyone receives treatment. They had a basket full of hats that people had made and donated. Some were very intricate and some just basic, but anyone can take one. Te staff said they were always appreciated and were excited to pick them out.
sorry to hear about your husband.. thoughts and prayers your way..God Bless!

Hey, Yawl, I visited their website, how to you find out what or where is close to you? I am guessing mine will be in St. Louis somewhere. Or I can ship out to someone, whichever works for me.

ok, here it is, I chain until it fits around my head [I use a P or N to start then switch to a J hook]
I single all around and join with a slip [make sure it's NOT twisted].
for the next 8-12 rows I single all around join w/ a slip add one ch to the end stitch to mark it, on last row of Single make it pretty loose
then I switch to a K hook and possibly a different yarn,
DC in each stitch for one row,
row 2 - two DC in each Stitch,
for the next three rows 1 DC in each stitch*
    1 row of decrease C.
three rows of DC in each stitch
    1 row of Decrease Dc.
three rows of DC in each stitch
    1 row of DC decrease
    1 row of DC
then load up a crochet Needle with a double strand, run it thru' each stitch put a small placeholder [two fingers works], pull the strands firm, tie off, turn inside out, make a small flower- attach it to the band and top of hat with leftover strand in a single.

this way the increase is easier, I only have to do it once and it's each stitch not every three like I've seen other slouchies.
