Pineapple stitch baby sweater and hat

I REALLY need help on the Pineapple stitch. I have tried to follow the pattern, but have had to rip it all out about 7 times. I don't want to give up, because the sweater and hat are so delicate and pretty. I need to get it done because the baby will be born in January. I can make the top half of the pineapple, but then I get lost. If anyone can help I would so appreciate it.

When it comes to the pineapple stitch I've come to realize that I need to count count count, and then pay attention to how the pattern flows. There's a logic and a rhythm to it. Good luck to you!
