A hat with stars

So, the other day I saw a crocheted beanie-style hat that had several rows of single crochet, then a worked pattern of 5-pointed stars, then some more single and double crochets to close it off. For,the life of me, I cannot figure out how to work these stars (I think they were all done with double crochets). These are not squares, and I'm not talking about star-stitch. It seems to be worked more like a filet, but with worsted weight yarn. Does anyone know how to do this? I can't seem to find a pattern anywhere.
