Hi Tanya,
Some time back I crocheted a 8 inch square. Not sure what I'm going to do with it. I think what I did is crocheted a granny square but crocheted in the stitches instead of the spaces. I was probably trying to remember how to do a granny square from memory. You could do this for a 12 inch square. This is what mine looks like:
