Many of the replies are what I say. Relaxing, joy of making a project, keeping the arthritis away in the hands and the especially the mind being retired. It has always been a joy. When my Dad was alive, I had taught him how to crochet. We had many discussions on types of yarn, colors, what size hook needed, etc. He has been gone many years, but still have his hooks that he used. They are priceless to me.
Hello members,

What do you feel are some of the benefits of crocheting? Thank you for the replies!
I crocheted too many hours in too many days a few years ago trying to finish a crocheted tablecloth to enter into a contest. Someone else made a bedspread and all I won was trigger fingers on both hands. My surgeon told me if I was not crocheting my hands would be in very bad shape with the arthritis and neuropathy. When I get tired of crocheting I work with plastic canvas.

well, I don't know that I've ever really felt relaxed per se, but it does keep my brain working.(?) lol Like others, I love the feeling of accomplishment when it's done, most of all it's so wonderful to give it to someone! Yes, they never believe you actually made it, and that you made it for them! So that becomes a benefit for both the (maker) giver AND the receiver! Such a boost for that self esteem!

One of my granddaughters told her mother recently that Nana was making afghans for everyone except her. My daugher told her I only
make them for babies and weddings and when she gets married, etc. I will make her one. Her brother's wife just had a boy a week ago. I have
had 3 baby afghans and 3 wedding afghans to make this year. I am working on the last one and I am really tired of squares.

my arthritis specialist told me that knitting was bad for the hands due to the twisting, however, he said that crocheting was actually good as it worked certain muscles and therefore they wouldn't stiffen up so much. I was quite surprised at this, fortunately, I've been crocheting for 35+ years and design my own patterns as well. Teresa

i BENEFIT BECAUSE I GET TO RELAX AND ENJOY MY FAVORITE HOBBY.
OTHERS BENEFIT FROM MY CROCHETING BECAUSE I GIVE ALMOST EVERYTHING I CROCHET AWAY.
I LEARN NEW PATTERNS FOR DISHCLOTHS OR AFGHANS.
I CAN CROCHET AND WATCH TV AT THE SAME TIME.X
I FEEL SO GOOD WHEN I GIVE THINGS AWAY OR MAKE A BLANKET FOR SOMEONE IN A NURSING HOME.
OR A BEST FRIEND'S NEW BABY ALL WRAPPED UP IN AN AFGHAN I MADE.
I JUST LOVE TO CROCHET!!!!!

Crocheting has kept the arthritis in my hands under control and has given me the joy of making hats, scarves and other fun stuff for my grand daughters. My four year old asked me to make her a purple hat this winter, what fun. I have also learned to incorporate crochet into my other favorite hobby, gardening. I recently purchased Petunias with a purple center and green trim. When I looked at the plant all I could think of was a scarf with those colors. It is now a work in progress, I will upload a photo when I am done. I am visually impaired so completing these projects gives my self esteem a real boost.

Hi Jerry and everyone,
Not used to seeing a guy crocheting, but I'm glad. I think its great. I have only tried afghans. I would love to try clothing. I think I'm afraid though to try something new. I did do a Indian doll clothing and couldn't get the sleeve right so maybe I'm afraid I couldn't get a sleeve right on clothing.
Its great that you took crocheting and turned it into a way to help you with stress. I will have to try that.
I got three small children. Two boys and two girls. Ranging frome 13 to 7. So ya I need to do something. I can never seem to find the time even if I don't work outside the home.
I also think this is great connecting with other crocheters. If we have a problem, then we can ask anyone to see if they had same or know what to do in that situation to help.

I like making things that will last through many lifetimes if taken care of. My granddaughter opened her gifts from me at her baby shower and she said thank you Granny for these heirlooms. Most of the things I have crocheted are still being used decades after I made them. The crocheted tablecloth that my Mother made for me will be on a table in the holidays for years and years to come. So in essence, I am giving a piece of me to be carried through many lifetimes.
