    help in translating pattern

I give up trying to crochet a hat from a pattern made of symbols. If anyone can translate from symbols and could help I would greatly appreciate it. The hat with the pattern is at this web site. crochet cap, crochet pattern | make handmade, crochet, craft
    Thanks,

Here it's a good site for reading charts. Crochet School Lesson 21: Reading Crochet Charts - Craftyminx

I will also attach my symbol diagram.

Sometimes i find it easier to just play around and try swatches to see if i can figure out the pattern. help in translating pattern-image-jpg

I'm sure you're going to get a few opinions on this but from what I see it looks like they alternate between dc and single crochet the first 9 rows X's being sc, The longer lines being dc. I'm not the best at writing these out so bear with me. and the final counts are guesstimates from what it shows on the pic. So hope it works out.
Rnd 1: 10 sc. (I would start in a magic ring just my preference) join w/ sl st to begining sc
Rnd 2: Ch 3(counts as first dc) dc in same st as ch 3, 2 dc in each sc around. join.(20 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next st* around. Join (30 sc)
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next st *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 st* around, Join (40 dc)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st* around. Join (50 sc)
Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in next 3 st. *2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 st* around. Join (60 dc)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 4 sc, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 st* around. Join (70 sc)
Rnd 8: Ch 3, dc in next 5 st. *2 dc in st, dc in next 6 st* around. Join (80 sc)
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 6 st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 st* around. Join (90 sc)
Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in same st. *ch 3, 3 dc in same st, sk next 2 st, sc in next st.* around. Join at top of 1st ch. Sl st along first ch 3, Turn (unsure of final count w/out doing it myself)
Rnd 11-18?: Ch 1, sc in same st as last sl st. *Ch 3, 3 dc around the ch3 from previous row. Sc in top of next cl.* Around. Join at top of 1st ch. Sl st along first ch 3, turn.
I'm sorry if this sounds confusing I'm not sure of how else to write it. From how they wrote the diagram, they re-stared the row count at rnd 9. So they have 19 rnds of the side stitch but from the pic I think they only have 10, but 19 all together. I think I will have to do the pattern myself to better explain it / know for sure.
Rnd 19: Ch 1, sc in same st. *Dc, ch 1, dc in next sc. Sc in top of next cl.* around. Join, turn.
Rnd 20: Ch 1, sc in same st. *Ch 1 sk next st, sc in next st* around
It doesnt say how many times it continues, but the pic looks like 4. Unsure if they switch to sc in every st or keep with sc ch 1 sc.
    The brim?
Row 1: Ch 27, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next 24 ch, 2 sc in last. Turn
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in next 2 st, sc in next 4 st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 st* twice, Sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in last 2 st.turn
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st. Sc in next 4st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 st* four times. 2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in last st. Turn
Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st, sc in each st across, 2 sc in last st. Turn
Row 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st, sc in next 6 st. 2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 16 st, 2sc in next st, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in last st. turn
Row 6: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st across, 2 sc in last. turn
Row 7: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, *sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next st* four times sc in next 6 sc, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sc* four times, 2 sc in last st. Turn
    Row 8-9: repeat row 4
Row 10: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, *sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in next st* 3 times, sc in next 32 st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sc* 3 times, 2 sc in last st.
    Row 11: repeat row 4
Row 12: Ch 1, sc in same st and each st across. Fasten off
If anyone see a mistake feel free to elaborate.

I inherited alot of crochet books and magazines from my grandma that had alot of diagrams and went through alot of trial and error figuring them out. So always glad to pass on hard earned knowledge, and there might still be flaws in the translation so if anyone trys it and has hang ups please help fill in the blanks.
