Hi paco12348. I think I've got it. I taught math for years and mapped out the pattern. It comes out right. If you chain 174 and dc in fourth chain from hook, that will put you in chain 171. I'm going to number your chains so you know what to do.
    171 dc and ch 1
    170 skip
    169 V stitch
    168 skip
    167 V stitch and ch 7
    *166-160 skip
    159 sc, chain 7
    158 skip
    157 sc, ch 7
    156-150 skip
    149 V stitch
    148 skip
    147 V stitch
    146 skip
    145 V stitch
144 skip ** Now repeat from 166-144 six more times.
From ch 171 to ch 144 you are using up 31 stitches, plus from 166-144 you repeat 6 times which is another 138 stitches. You have a double crochet at the end of your row which is 1 more stitch. 31+138+1= 170. Since you're starting in stitch 171 and you use up 170 stitches above, that should be 1 left over which is your beginning chain. I wrestled with this for awhile to come up with this. It seems right. Let me know if it is. Carol

paco12348, don't think you're a dummy. I spent 2 months trying to figure out a V stitch shawl. Directions were very poorly written. I've always been told to draw out the pattern. I number each stich and label it, then see what's going on. It seems to help. Every pattern is different. It's a shame there isn't a common way to write patterns for everyone. Good luck. Let me know if you figured out my directions. Carol

    Help with reading pattern

Oh, Wow. Now this I can follow. I'm eager to began and thanks for the math/crochet reading lesson. I never thought of writing out each stitch. Now, I'm excited. Will let you know the outcome. I know this must have taken time to do, Carol, and I certainly appreciate your effort. Thanks again.

paco12348, it was my pleasure. I love trying to challenge my brain a little. I was really stuck on a sweater that had V's all through and couldn't get the count right because I had to increase the pattern 3 sizes. grandmajenny rewrote the pattern for
2XL and I was able to complete it. Hope all turns out ok. Let me know how this works out. I think I got it though. Carol

    Help with reading pattern

    Hi Carol,
What you worked out did work for that row but not for the second one. That told me the pattern had to be wrong. I purchased it from Mary Maxim so I sent that site a message to pull the pattern and explained why. I do thank you for effort.
I'll try to explain where the problem occurred. You had 3 chain 7's in a row but the middle one was only a ch 3.
I have ripped it all out and found a pattern that I can read. lol Even my crochet for dummies book did not speak to following stars and brackets the way that pattern was written.
Thanks again and I will be using the writing a pattern out with each stitch the way you did when I encounter a problem in the future. Frankly, I prefer filet crochet. Much simpler.
