You know I really don't like this patter. I just saw something on here that would confuse someone that hasn't done a lot of hats.
on rnd 3 ch 3. [1 dc. 2 dc in next st.] rep around. sl st to join. (48), the way I would have written it is
rnd 3 ch 3 [1 dc. 2 dc in next st.], *dc in next 2, 2 dc in next st. rep from * around sl st to top of beginning ch 3 to join..

I agree with you 100%
I think as a beginner this wouldn't be a very good pattern to go by, very confusing.. I guess she figured it free, so it doesn't matter..
