I have trouble too! I usually say a few choice words after the 3 or 4 tries, and for some reason that seems to help!!!! I may have to try Landon's suggestion! I'll have to look for a bunch of stuff to hand on the chain!! Do you suppose fishing lures would work??!!!! They are made of metal!!!

paperclips, bobby pins, anything, even plastic pieces. it is so you know which end is which. Weight may not be an issue as long as the chain is clearly marked.

IN my experience when making a long chain that I don't want it to twist, I take a safety pin and right after I start the chain and I have made a few chains, I safety pin it to my pants or whatever I have on until I get done and slip stitch it together and then it is not twisted....Just a suggestion that works for me...Happy Crafting!!

MissCarol43, another great idea! Although I would forget I had it pinned to me and get up and fall over it when I laid it down to get up. But I may try it anyway!

BEFORE you do that slip st join, lay the whole chain out on a surface [your thigh will do], smoothing it with the bumpy BACK side [no pun intended] UP.
Pick up the BEGINNING and sl st into the first st in the way you always do.
It should not twist if you have smoothed it out and not moved it before you do the joining stitch.
BTW, what are you making with 54 stitches joind into a circle? THAT has really riled up my curiosity!
