I'm going to throw my 2 cents worth in here. I believe the stitch you're referring to is called a "cable stitch" described in Beginner's Guide Crochet Stitches & Easy Projects, Leisure Art Little Book, with the green front.
Multiple of 3 + 2 chs.
Row 1 - Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across.
To work Cable (uses next 3 sc) - Ch 3 loosely, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc. Turn. Working on ch just made, sc in each of next 3 chs {or you could just work OVER the chain}, slip st in next sc (sc made before ch 3). Turn. Working behind cable, sc in 2 skipped sc.
Row 2 (right side) - Ch 1, turn; sc in first sc, work Cables across, slip st in last sc (sc made after ch 3 of last cable).
Row 3 - Ch 1, turn; working in front of cables, sc in first slip st and next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) across to last 2 sc, sc in last 2 sc. Repeat rows 2 and 3 for pattern.
