    Hi Lucie,
What did you crochet so far? Did you crochet row 28 or did you just get as far as getting row 17 done?

By the picture it looks like you did the 22 sl sts and chained 1 on row 28. Then it tells you to turn.

Actually, I am not sure I copied the correct portion of the pattern. I am trying again--I am okay up until the highlighted portion. Oooops, Attachment is not readable so I copied and inserted pattern below.

For all sizes follow Rounds 1-7
Chain 3 and join into a ring with a slip stitch.
Row 1) 8 hdc into ring, slst to join (8 sts)
Row 2) ch 2, 2 hdc in ea st, slst to join (16 sts),
Row 3) ch 2, 2 hdc in first st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in following st* slst to join (24 sts)
Row 4) ch 2, 2 hdc in first st, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in following st* slst to join (32 sts)
Row 5) ch 2, 2 hdc in first st, *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in following st* slst to join (40 sts)
Row 6) ch 2, 2 hdc in first st, *hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in following st* slst to join (48 sts)
Row 7) ch 2, 2 hdc in first st, *hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in following st* slst to join (56 sts)
***All measurements are with the hat laid flat, so double it to get circumference.
Baby 0-6 months (width measures 7.25”)
Rows 8 – 16 or until hat measures 5” crown to base) ch2, hdc in ea st, slst to join (56 sts)
Row 17) ch 1, sc in next 38 sts, ch 1, turn
Row 18) slst for 22 sts, ch 1, turn
    Brim:
Row 19) sc through both rows 17 & 18 for 22 sts, make 2 sc in the 2nd st (by sc these two rows together you are creating a thick row and turning 2 rows into 1), ch 1 turn (23 sts)
Row 20) sl st all the way back, ch 1, turn (23)

Row 21) sc through previous 2 rows, making 2 sc in 5th st from beginning and 5th st from end, ch1, turn (25)
Row 22) sl st all the way back, ch1, turn (25)
Row 23) sc through previous 2 rows, ch1, turn (25)
Row 24) sl st all the way back, DON’T ch1, turn (25) *by skipping the chain 1 it helps to create a rounder edge on the brim
Row 25) still single crocheting through both rows… skip the 1st st, sc in 2nd st and in each st until you get to the 2nd st from the end, sc last 2 sts together (23)
Row 26) sl st all the way back, DON’T ch1, turn (23)
Row 27) still single crocheting through both rows… skip the 1st st, sc in 2nd st and in each st until you get to the 2nd st from the end, sc last 2 sts together (21)
(you should now have 5 thick rows for the brim)
Row 28) slst down the side of the brim, once you reach the base of the hat sc in each st until you reach the seam, slst to join, ch1
Row 29) sc around the entire hat, slst to join.
Tie off and weave in end.

On row 19 you are to sc rows 17 and 18 together. They are telling you that by crocheting rows 17 and row 18 together that it will be thick and instead of 2 rows you will only have 1 row because you crocheted rows 17 and 18 together. When you crochet rows 17 and 18 together you are crocheting the 22 sts but they're asking you to put 2 sc's in the 2nd st so you will have 23 sts instead of 22 sts. You are making the brim of the hat.

Right now I have crocheted rows 17 and 18 together and have 22 sts. - I am not sure what/where the 2nd st is?

Pull that out and start over crocheting rows 17 and 18 together. 1 sc in the 1st st, 2 sc's in the 2nd st, 1 sc in the 3rd st, 1 sc in the 4th st and 1 sc in ea of the remaining sts.

Okay, I pulled it out. Do you mean I do reach down to Row 17 to insert the hook and do: 1 sc in the 1st st, 2 sc's in the 2nd st, 1 sc in the 3rd st, 1 sc in the 4th st and 1 sc in ea of the remaining sts and wind up with one row of 23 stitches?

    Hi Lucie,
At the end of row 18 you have 22 sts. On row 19 they want you to crochet through rows 17 and 18 . When you get to row 19 it's 1 sc in the 1st st, 2 sc's in the 2nd st, 1 sc in the 3rd st and 1 sc in the remaining sts on row 19 and because you added a st or increased by one st you will have 23 sts at the end of row 19.

I have completed Row 18 and have 22 single crochets. I need to turn, chain one. Where to insert hook-row-19-jpgTo start crocheting through rows 17 and 18 do I insert my hook here (red arrow)?
