    Pattern question

The pattern calls to join and chain 3
Next round: DC 4 in first stitch.
Then skip 2 and DC 5 in next stitch - this part repeats around.
Then join with the first DC

So does that mean, I join in the top of the chain 3? (Since it seems that it is considered a DC, since all of the others have 5)
Or do I skip over it and join with the actual first DC?

I would say, yes, join at the top of the chain 3. If it doesn't look right after you go along a bit, you can always rip it out and try it the other way!

Yes, I would join in the top of the chain 3 because that's considered a dc.

When you chain 3 then do 4 DC and skip 2 and 5 DC.The first chain 3 plus 4DC =5DC of the round. So you should join in the top of the chain 3 to make your round even. If you skipped over the chain3 to the next DC your work would pull and you would be 1 stitch less in your count.
