For me it will depend on the recipient. I'll usually do a very simple pattern such as the one shown here
Lace Shawl or wrap Crocheted One of a Kind jewel by crochetgal

but on occasion I'll go with a much more complex pattern as seen in my other patterns.
Lace shawl butterfly style alpaca and silk sapphire by crochetgal

A simple lace pattern will work as well.

    prayer Shawl patterns

here is one I found online:
The Original Prayer Shawl Crochet Pattern © 2011 All rights reserved.

    Developed by Rita Glod

Chain 54 stitches or desired width of shawl.
Chain 1, turn, single crochet in each of the stitches to end. Chain 3 and turn.
Double crochet in top of each single crochet. Repeat this row 2 more times.
Chain 1 and do 1 row of single crochet to end. Chain 3 and turn.
Do 3 rows of double crochet. Repeat pattern to end (1 row single, 3 rows double)
End with 1 row of single. Finish with fringe.

*Note: that crocheting typically uses more yarn than knitting, so you might have to adjust the width and size of hook or use another 1/2 skein.

It has been suggested that skeins of the same dye lot be purchased.

    Rita,

I have used Simply Soft ('I' hook) and I Love This Yarn ('J' hook) and just did double crochet for 22x72 rectangles. The one I'm working on now is Simply Soft, 'I' hook, and doing a 3 dc, ch1 sk 1 across ending with a 3dc. The alternate row is just a dc. It's OK and at least isn't as boring as just the dc! It's about 3 skeins of Simply Soft and 2 of the I Love This Yarn.
