Could it be...through back loop? I'm not sure either.

When you are making a double crochet stitch you wrap the yarn around the hook twice, with treble you wrap the yarn around the hook three times. You proceed like you were doing a double crochet stitch with another wrap. This makes a taller stitch.

All the directions I have seen for a treble says to wrap the yarn around the hook 3 times instead of 2 like you do for a double.

tbl;means through back loop
tfl; means through front loop
These terms are normally used when making a ribbing when crocheting.
For a treble (triple) crochet it is just tr and you wrap the yarn around twice and pull thru three times.
I hope this helps,

WOW! I have always wrapped around 1 time for double and 2 times around for treble. I think tr does stand for treble, and I don't know about the tbl.
SO, who's right,??????

Just looked on the Craft Council Master List. TBL- does mean through the back loop. That is a very good place to go for information. Try it.
