Differnce between skeins and balls

Thank you so much!! I knew finding the end in some yarn was difficult and ended up with a mess in my lap (some of the big balls of baby yarn, lb. of love etc.) now I know why. Do they do this on all brands of yarn? I just figured that Red Heart was being nicer than the other brands by putting the instructions on the packaging making it more user friendly. Now I know!!
