Try this. It has measurement suggestions for all types of blankets. I hope this is what you are looking for. Personally I prefer a blanket to be a bit wider and not so long as I tend to curl up and not stretch out!
I hope the link works for you. I found it by going to Pinterest and searching "afghan size charts"

I look at patterns and check the finished dimensions to see what's normal, but it really depends on what you want to use it for.

I agree, it depends on who is receiving it. Some like to wrap it around them, others just like something smaller to cover their legs.

I just finished a big ripple pattern blanket for my son. He's 6'2" tall and I made the blanket 6 feet wide and 7 feet long so he'll be able to wrap up in it. It took me about a week to make. I'll post a photo of it on the "Pictures" thread.

    long blanketI

When making afghans. I measure it by holding it up and using my height to make it the length I want it. Oops. guess i didn't explain enough. I don't make them for myself. This how I measure to make afghans for other people. Some wnat long ones and then I measure this way for lapghans by putting in my lap and measure to the floor.

I make different sizes from small lap afghans and some that are big enough to fit a bed for a top cover so any where from 45" to over 6'
