Dog hair
In our local paper today, there was an article about an area woman who spins dog hair into yarn and then uses it to make sweaters, shawls, etc. Would you use dog hair yarn? I don't know that I would. Maybe if I was offered some I would use it. But what would I make? My hubby wonders if cats would hiss at you if you were wearing a dog hair sweater?!!! She didn't meantion crocheting with it though-but yarn is yarn!

Maryjane,
That is an interesting concept. I would be concerned is someone was allergic to dogs. I know there is probably some type of process which would eliminate some of this. Funny thought about the cat's reaction! :0)

The article mentioned that there should be no allergies to it as the dander (supposedly what the people react to in an allergy) is washed out before the hair is spun! Still seems a bit strange!

I have a white American Eskimo dog and have saved his fur in the past to experiment with. Chiengora (chien is french for dog) is something like 80 % warmer than wool. When I spun the fur, I mixed it with either wool roving or with fur from my angora bunny. It had a beautiful halo, almost like nice angora. It was a fun experiment and I may actually collect his fur again with the intent of making mittens, hat and gloves. A woman I taught with had mittens made from her dog's fur and they were so very warm, she could only wear them on the coldest days or skiing, etc.

Things made of dog fur are supposed to be twice as warm as wool!

I would think it wouldn't be much different than any other animal's fur.

I was reminded the other day that if you have a dog or cat, you already wear "fur" garments!! I have a cat and my daughter, who I babysit for, has two cats and a dog! Plenty of "fur" garments in this house!!
