The tunisian stitch is pretty easy, it's kind of like knitting but easier.
If you can follow the pattern on the graph you can do this.
Here's a link to a really nice tutorial.
I'll be crocheting a man's beanie using this method
and adding his nick name to the hat.

I imagine the mouth and lines on the face and lines on the feathers and cap are embroidered.
