half double crochet
I was looking at a pattern and it says to hdc in the second chain from the hook so I googled it because I thought the hdc was supposed to be in the 3rd chain from the hook and I found this video that says you can put a hdc in the 2nd or 3rd stitch from the hook. I didn't know that.

This video says to work in the 3rd chain from the hook for beginners and she wraps the yarn around the hook so when teaching beginners how to crochet maybe they should start the hdc in the 3rd chain from the hook?

Maybe when you do HDC in the 3rd chain it is to give you a little height for your row and that all of your HDC are the same height.

I was taught to use the second chain and to chain 2 at the end of the row when using the hdc.

It probably depends a lot on the pattern. Sometimes I use a chain 2 for a dc, sometimes I use a chain 3 - could possibly apply to the hdc too.

Hi Dafydil,
I also put the hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook and ch 2 at the end of the row. I didn't know about putting the hook in the 3rd ch from the hook when doing a hdc as stated in the video above. I guess it's a matter of preference. Just like the dc is a ch 2 or ch 3 at the end of the row. Normally it's a ch 3 but for a straighter edge it's a ch 2 for dc.

Hi Nova, I agree it depends on the pattern.
