Welcome to all the newbies!
bevlynott,
What you might be doing is one or both of two things. 1) Forgetting your turning chain 2) Missing the last stitch on the row. It sometimes likes to lay over on its side which makes it tough to see. Try a basic seed stitch: Crochet an even number of chains for your base. Ch 1 more for your turning chain. Sc in the second stitch from your hook. Dc in the next stitch. *Sc in next stitch, dc in next stitch.* Continue to end of chain ending with dc. Ch 1 for turning chain, turn. Sc in first stitch, dc in next. Continue in this pattern always beginning a row with a sc and ending the row with a dc, then chaining 1 for your turning chain. If you don't end with a dc then you made a mistake along that row. Rip out back to your mistake, fix it and continue on. I promise our dishcloths will never be lopsided again. This is a great pattern for beginners or for those of us who really hate counting stitches because you always start with a sc and end with a dc. That last dc is the most important, it lets you know if you made a mistake in that row.
Good Luck!
