How long of a tail?
I see in the pattern, that after working up the individual hexi, you then leave a very long 'tail' attached, so that you can join it to other hexi's. I'm wondering how long that tail should be. I suppose it's too hard to estimate, not knowing what type of yarn a person is going to use?

There's no need to leave a tail. The designer uses a join as you go with the slip stitch. I'm sure once you start crocheting it, it'll all fall into place. Good Luck!
