Here is a link to a picture of a lovely afghan, done in the granny square pattern, all in white. There isn't a pattern shown, but there are granny square patterns all over the internet. I am sure you can find a good one.
I myself would never try to make an afghan out of crochet thread, because it would take me a lifetime to do, lol. I would be inclined to use a good quality acrylic yarn, so that the afghan would be washable.
When you click on the link, you need to scroll down a ways to see the afghan. Past all the Christmas posts, on the November 21 post.

Hobby lobby has the best soft, durable, and easy to work with yarn on the market. It is their brand called I Love This Yarn! It comes in a multitude of colors.

Nanners, do you know what colors they like. Hobby Lobby has great yarn and in beautiful colors. If you are thinking of one to put on the bed , make it a big one . one for the couch doesn,t have to be quite so big. A granny is good and so is a ripple with the different colors One in all white or a cream color makes a nice present Go to Redheart and type in crochet then afghans. They have a lot of designs. You can get some ideas there. Good luck. Margaret
