Hi Peggy, we all have to start from somewhere. I've been crocheting for a billion years... (Exaggerating by a few million of course. Ha ha) But my profile pic is the first thing I have ever crocheted that almost looks like its pattern. Everything else looks like the pictures in Landan's earlier post. So don't worry too much about what your work looks like. Plus posting pics may just help fix any problems you may have. Some one else may have just made the same errs and would gladly give you a tip on how not to do so in the future.
