I did try crocheting with thread but I can't keep a hold on it besides nothing says comfy like a nice crocheted afghan

Oh I am Sure you could. You could even just switch to yarn on one of your doily patterns or start out with small granny's or even just rows of any stitch you like

I prefer #30 thread for doileis. And when I send it abroad - it s cheaper than thick thread

I don't know too much about thread size but I do know I tried #10 and it was to hard I have Raynauld's and fibromyalgia so my hands don't always do what I tell them to do

Oh! I wish you good health! #10 is thick and doilies look ugly. But some patterns ate better with thick thread.
