    Symbol in crochet instructions-what does it mean?

    I am crocheting a vest and have come across the pound sign (#) and do not know how to read it in combination with * and ** that is also used in the instructions.

    Without seeing the pattern I can only assume that it means this work instructions within parentheses as many times as directed. With the # being the number of times you need to repeat.
