My first job was in a deptstore simular to WaLmart, and I made $1.25 an hour.

Fun thread! Mine was working in a dance studio downtown, calling people up and trying to get them to take "Free" dance lessons. I was paid 50 cents an hour, and I got a small bonus if anyone actually signed up. Hardly anyone ever did, lol. I worked after school from 5:00 to 9:00.

My next job was the summer I was 17, and I worked as a waitress at the Greyhound Union Bus Station downtown, in the coffee shop. My pay was about the same, $4.00 for an 8 hour shift! But you could come early, and eat for free before your shift. Then you got 20 minutes for lunch, which was also free. Then after you got off, you could eat again free. There were only certain things we could have on the menu, mostly hamburgers and sandwiches.

My family was having a very hard time, and I really appreciated the free food. Also, at the time, there was a large Navy Base in Norman, Oklahoma, about 20 miles from Oklahoma City where I worked. Every weekend, the sailors would all take the bus to the "Big City", Oklahoma City, for their weekend leave.

They were all very young and cute, and I was pretty happy that they came right into the coffee shop and flirted with all of us. They seemed very sophisticated compared to the high school boys I knew. My first "love" was a sailor from Pennsylvania named Hank. It was a summer romance, and then he shipped out. We wrote for a couple of months, but that was it.

My first job was in 1963 at a local movie theatre while I was still in high school. It paid 50 cents an hour and the tickets and concessions were all sold from one area, so I did both. Candy bars were 5 and 10 cents and a big box of popcorn was 10 cents. I had that job for two years until the theatre was sold.

This is fun reading all the replies. It seems us gals "of a certain age" all made about 50 cents an hour. I've tried to tell my kids and grandkids that, and they hardly believe it is true.

But like Sweet Sue said, stuff cost so much less in those days, too. I remember the candy bars and popcorn. And there was a neighborhood theater that only cost 35 cents to get in for "second run" movies.

Nope, I still gotcha - it was 35 cents for adults, and only 10 cents for kids under 12, lol.

My first "real" job, other than babysitting and working when I was in high school at the high school library and as a teachers aide at an elementary school under a special program when my dad was out of work due to emergency surgery, was for the telephone company and I started in 1970 (and retired in 1999) and I made $84.50 a week at that time. I was 18 when I started and retired at 47. That was the only job I ever had.
