Howdy, Sonja! You'll enjoy the crew here, they're great folks. Warning about learning to knit, though: once you get it down, it'll make you wanna do it 24/7 (well, crocheting butterflies does it to me as well). You might enjoy mitered knitting, aka modular or domino knitting (Horst Schultz is the guy who made it really well known). You can make small units just with garter stitch (that is, nothing but the knit stitch).
