    For Susan J

Susan, i have tried to post this for the 3rd time and lost it every time!!

Somewhere I read you take cholesterol meds I think. I wanted to tell you my experience with my cholesterol med.

I was on Prevastatin for a good while and began to hurt all over , my joints , muscles, everything. Then I got to where I could hardly get up out of the chair and when I did, I couldn't hardly take that first step to start walking. I hurt so much I cried sometimes. I asked the doctor if the medicine would make me hurt like that and he said NO... Well I just didn't believe him. I asked his nurse the same question and she said YES it can. so I just quit it "cold turkey". Then I started getting better and the pain went away. THEN.....I had surgery for my bladder problem and spent 9 days in the nursing home. When I went home I found they had me back on Prevastatin again. Again I started hurting like before so I quit it again, and again I got better. I know without a doubt that med did it to me and I will never take it ever again. SO SUSAN....if you are on Prevastatin....I say COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN and ask you doctor about it and tell him you want some other kind of cholesterol med. Originally they had told me my cholesterol was "borderline" so why did they prescribe it anyway? I would rather have cholesterol than take Prevastatin any day! Love ya, Patty

PS Has anyone else taken Prevastatin and had this problem with it?

I take simvastatin and I have had no problem with it to my knowledge. With all the problems I have had lately I wouldn't know which came first the pain or the medicine so I can't say for sure but I feel that it works without painful side effects.

I sincerely hope so Faye. My friend told me she thought that was my problem way before I asked the doctor. She knew I was having problems and asked me what I was taking for my cholesterol, then she told me about another person she knew who had the same problem and was taking the same RX and that's why she told me it was probably my medicine. If I had continued with it I probably wouldn't be walking today! The stupid doctor doesn't know what he is talking about! I really would like to change doctors. And maybe I will yet! But then maybe it doesn't do it to everyone who takes it... who knows? Love Patty

Hi, Redhead. I honestly can't remember the name of the statin, but I know one of my family members had a terrible time with one, and refused to take it. It is a fairly well known side effect of many statins. Some people feel the trade off is worth it, some really cannot function with that kind of debilitation. Other statins can be the answer as not one statin effects everyone the same way.

I'm pleased for you that you are out of pain. It's terrible not to be able to move or walk well. Take care now!

OKWTink, Thanks for your support in my stopping that med. If my cholesterol gets worse I will maybe give something else a try, just never again Prevastatin!

Yes, you do need to change doctors, if your doctor will not listen to what you tell him about the affects of your medication. We all need to advocate for ourselves with our doctors. Just because they have a medical degree, does not mean they know it all.

Remember that joke? What do you call the guy who graduated last in his medical class of 300? Doctor!

I am fortunate and don't need to take any prescriptions at all, but my husband has COPD and a history of heart problems, and takes quite a few. I look up everything on the internet that they give to him and read all the pros and cons. Sometimes doctors do not like to be disagreed with, but I don't care, and they don't scare me. If I think they are doing something that is not in my husband's best interest, I speak up.

He is 89 years old and had quintuple bypass surgery about 15 years ago, with good success. So, I think it is safe to say he has "heart problems" lol. Recently a new cardiologist wanted to give him a chemical stress test on his heart because of course he cannot walk on a treadmill.

I looked the test up and found that elderly heart patients have DIED from the stress of the stress test!! At this point, it would not tell them anything useful that they don't already know anyway. My husband agreed with me, and we told the doctor that he would not be taking that test.

That was a year ago. His doctor backed off on the test, we found another cardiologist, and my husband is doing well. So speak up if you question something.

Hi Patty my hubby and I are on simvastatin, now I really haven't had any problems with it especially since I have been on all my other meds for awhile so I would know! My hubby on other hand seems to be having more problems with pain but they switch his meds so often I wouldn't know which was causing problems! I will suggest to him to stop and see if he feels better or not! Thanks for the information! So glad you figured it out and you need to give your dr. a piece of your mind! You know how you feel not him! Not every side affect on meds are exact, they list a lot on them but there are other side effects that can occur from meds and sometimes you will notice right away and other times it might take a week or so! I only can take certain meds due to having severe reactions like welts, fainting, weight gain, and others! LOVE YOUR FRIEND MANDA!

Patty, my hubby was on Lipitor and had the side effects you described. I kept telling him to call the dr but of course he wouldn't. I made him an appointment. Our family dr took him off the Lipitor right away. He could have died from the side effects. Our family dr was upset that another dr in the same group gave him Lipitor without warning him of the side effects. He is now on 3 different cholesterol meds without any problems. I take simvatatin (the generic for Zocor) and haven't had any problems. But my hubby had a "minor" heart attack in 1995 so our family dr is very careful of hubby's cholesterol and meds. Hubby has to carry nitroglycerine pills around with him at all times in case he gets any chest pain. So far hubby is fine but dr said it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. I agree. But we are lucky, we have a great family doctor HUGS, Shelly
