bargello pattern?

I found an instruction for the basic bargello stitch, but it is not sufficient to even make a scarf...the pattern alone causes the work to curl inward as the edges keep diminishing. Does anyone have more information or a pattern for an afghan or something in this stitch? It's quite attractive, but???
