Hi I am a retired RN and have a problem with wanting to make a shawl for a granddaughter but the pattern I want to use is for 3 ply yarn and the yarn I want to use is 4 ply. Does anyone know if I can use the 4ply? What size do you think I will get in a finished shawl? Thanks for any help.

Sometimes you can adjust for different yarn size by using a different size hook. Does your pattern have a gauge? Try making a gauge swatch using the recommended size hook and see how close it looks when you use the 4 ply yarn. If it needs to be larger, use a larger hook than the pattern calls for, and then check it again.

I think doing the gauge swatch is so important when you are changing the type of yarn. Going down one size hook with the 4ply may be the only thing you need to adjust but if you do the gauge swatch you will know for sure. Good luck!!
