It might have something to do with the markers. Maybe place marker or put marker. That's all I can think of when reading the directions. XOXO

pm = place marker
It means to put a stitch marker on the needle.
There are many types of stitch markers -- basically it is just something (often a little ring or some sort) that can be slipped on your needle and that won't slip off accidentally.
Putting a stitch marker (say) every 10th row reduces the work in counting rows.
I looked it up on the web, LOL!
