To wind or not to wind?!?!

Just a question I had wondering through my crochet mind---why do some crocheters and knitters wind their yarn into balls? I could never find the time to do that. I would either start a skein of yarn in the middle or the outside of the skein and crochet from there. Can any of my fellow crochet and knitting yarnies share their ideas?

I don't do it for every skein but some skeins are a tangled mess when you start but if I start to have problems I go to the ball winder. I spend too much of my time untangling yarn. I have a manual winder and an electric and a swift and I use that every time when I work with a hank of yarn.

alot of my yarn does very good for me when i use it, it does not tangle on me until i get right to the last end of the skein. as for as the hanks i have never bought them. they have a fancy yarn shop where i live and they hanks are sooooo pricey---$20.00 and up for a hank. they have lovely colors in those hanks. as for ball winders i do not own one----yet!!

I've gotten the hanks on Ebay and the swift and a ball winder are really needed to keep it from becoming tangled.

Look on Ebay, I got mine for about half for the price. Check Amazon too. I don't think the brands make a difference. But I always go for price over brand.

Thanks for the information, Twinfaye. Do you prefer the manual or electric yarn winders?
