I have always used the shaft to keep my stitches the same size. However I have a friend who does beautiful work and only uses a size F hook, but to look at her work you would never think she uses that small of a hook. She adjusts her tension by pulling the yarn the same amount from the hook I think. I don't know how she does it, but it works for her.
I'll stick with using the shaft.

I don't think I would ever be able to keep an even tension that way, she's very talented!

I never could keep my stitches even, will give it a try myself.
Judi, I have a friend that uses the same size hook for everything also, How she does it I don't know.. She has been crocheting for over 50 years and does gorgeous work.
