Starting an afghan
Is it common for your work to curl until there are several rows?

It may also depend on several other factors: how tight you are crocheting, as well as the type of yarn you are using.

I have had trouble with rows not coming out due to being short on stitches. Is there a trick or technique to keeping count?

I have to make sure my first two rows are right by counting and recounting ....you just can't avoid that...I also use small safety pins or plastic hoops to make sure I've got it right...after that you should be ok....happy crocheting.

Nope, just count and make sure all the rows have the exact amount of stitches. : )
