Hi to you all!

I thought I'd crochet this http://25.media.tumblr.com/49378a5bd...y48so1_500.jpg nifty little trivet before bed-time yesterday... How wrong was I! Got stuck on the third row:

ch 6, work 1 dc in 4th and
5th chs from hook, sk 1 dc, hdc2tog
with last ch and next dc, *ch 3, work
2 dc around second leg of hdc2tog just
made,** hdc2tog beg first leg around
same st, rep from * 14 times, then rep
from * to ** once more, work 1 more dc
around leg, sl st to top of first 3ch.

Furthermore, I don't understand how repeating from the asterisk would connect the little V/shell fragments to the previous row as in the photo.
