Howdie and welcome; it looks like a half double crochet; but if you type into google a hat w/ ear flaps you might come up w/ the actual pattern; if not I will keep my eyes out for one...hope this helps....til then happy crocheting.

it is hdc USA UK it would be a DC if I remember the conversation I had with someone in the airport one time those are just the symbols that tell you what the different stitches mean
