When you are responding, click on the Go Advanced button, at the bottom and next to Post Quick Reply on the right. You'll see the smiley face emoticons and if you hover your mouse on each face, a tiny message window will drop down telling you what emotion each face represents. You are only allowed 4 per post.
When you use the Go Advanced button, you'll also see more symbols below the area you are typing in.
