Help! What size does crochet cotton come in?

    Hi
I'm still experimenting on filling (completely) in a split/pleat in a garment with crochet cotton. I have made a sample with #40 thread and as I have to fold it after sewing it to the skirt, it come out too thick and causes the top flap to gape open somewhat.
So I am hoping that if I use a smaller thread, that it might work.
I also need to know what size hook to use with it. I'm from Canada and I dont have a conversion chart for the letters on the hooks but I am familiar with the metric (mm) system so, so if you could include that I would appreciate it.

I haven't posted much but I do visit the site quite frequently and enjoy it.

Thanks to all of you for being so willing to help and share your knowledge.

    Diane.

    Hello Diane,

There is crochet cotton yarn and thread. Which one did you use? I am assuming the crochet cotton thread. There are different sizes of thread for different types of projects.

Here is a metric conversion chart for hook comparisons:

I personally have not used thread, but we have members who use it regularly. I only have experience with yarn. Please let us know which one you are using and if you can post a picture to the site, that may be more helpful.

Diane, go to the website: heirloomcrochet.com. It tells you EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about crochet thread, the sizes. brands. what each size is commonly used for, which hook to use with what size and probably a lot of stuff you don't even care to know about it. I hope this helps.--Jan

    Hello Barbara G
    Thanks for your quick reply.
I do indeed use the crochet cotton thread and use a Milward crochet hook size 8

Thank you very much for the hook conversion chart, that helps a lot.

Although I have crocheted all of my adult life, I have very little experience with thread, but I have made a few doilies. I do not know what all is available except the few different thread that I have at home.

    Hi Jan
I have been to the site and all I can find is the books that they are selling. Am I missing something?
