Would I be able to use a DK?...
Hi All,
I would like to crotchet this Caron Adult Crochet V-Neck Vest, XS/S | Yarnspirations pattern, but would like to do it in a Double Knit Coffee Cotton / Cotton blend. It is for my father in-law, he normally wears an XL. Would it be fine if I make the pattern in an XXL with the DK and a 4.5mm hook?
Any suggestions welcome…
It is a birthday gift
Thank you for your time

Hello and welcome to the crochet forums! The link shows that you can make it in bigger sizes. Here are the notes:
SIZING NOTES
Making the right size is important! Take a look at the dimensions of your new projects and choose the one that’s right for you, and always make a gauge swatch to match your tension.
To fit bust/chest measurement:
XS/S 28-34" [71-86.5 cm]
M 36-38" [91.5-96.5 cm]
L 40-42" [101.5-106.5 cm]
XL 44-46" [ 112-117 cm]
2XL/3XL 48-54" [122-137 cm]
4XL/5XL 56-62" [142-157.5 cm]
Finished bust/chest measurement:
XS/S 36” [91.5 cm]
M 39˝" [100 cm]
L 43˝" [110.5 cm]
XL 48" [122 cm]
2XL/3XL 54" [137 cm]
4XL/5XL 62" [157.5 cm]

The pattern suggests a 5 mm hook, or H/8. So, the 4.5 mm is very close, but it is a little smaller.

Dear Barbara,
Thank you! And thank you for your response.
When I tested the my guard I did it with the DK coffee cotton / cotton blend and a 5mm hook, the chain 13 came out to 7.5cm instead of 10cm.
I need the vest to be an XL, so if I make the XXL do you think that would compensate for the shortfall?
Thank you for your time!

Hello Hekel,
Here is a tip I hope will help you.
If the number of stitches is less than the number of stitches given in the gauge ( you used a 5mm hook and got 7.5cm instead of 10cm) try using a smaller hook. If the number of stitches is greater than the number given in the gauge try again using a larger hook.
