Help in counting chains
When a pattern says, "change so many", do you count the initial slip stitch as the first chain?

Hello,
When you are counting your chains, look at the Vs you have as shown is this picture. Usually, you will skip the first chain.

It's a little puzzling. It looks like they did count the first slip stitch, but not the last one on the hook. So I guess if I don't count the slip stitch, but count the last one I made, it is the same thing. Right?

I don't count the first stitch, but I do count the last loop on the hook as a chain! It would be the same if you did it the other way around!

Thanks, Maryjane. It is always helpful if the pattern says how many stitches you are working with at the end of the first worked row. That always reassures me, but not all patterns tell me that, like the one I am beginning now.

Great illustration Barbi,
Remember you never count the loop on the hook unless the pattern tells you to. All other chains are counted.

No. You count the chains (stitches) hanging off the hook.
