I finished it!
I started to crochet the 4 sets of 3 dc and wasn't sure about the next rows so I got the idea that I could just crochet small squares - the 4 sets of 3 dc, the start of the granny square, and crochet them together for a lapgan.
Well, it turned out I ss 2 squares tog back to back w/30 squares ss tog for a strip w/15 squares on ea side. I made 8 of these strips and ss the strips tog. I then ss across the other way and today thought I just had some yarn ends to weave in but some of the ss had come out and so I took out some more yarn so I could redo it and I got to the end of the row w/the slip stitches, which wasn't far, had to add another piece of yarn (which I knotted) so I could weave in the yarn. I don't like knots even at the end of my row.
It turns out it's 240 squares, That's 15 across one way and 16 across the other way. I thought about putting a border on it but now I'm not so sure about it. I could just ss around for the border. It turned out to be a bigger project than I thought it would be.

WOW! Jean Marie that is some big task. I like to do baby things they don't take as long to finish. HA

I can think of easier ways to make a lapgan in a hurry! Like some rapidly moving stitches using super chunky that you can finish in a day. Hope we can see what it looks like.

Hi Jean Marie,
That is a very colorful piece of art. What are you going to do with it? Is the front puffy? It looks like it will be nice and warm and cozy on dreary days.
Nice job and lots of work.

Thank you kl1000 and Spoula! I originally was making it for a lapgan but since it was a big project I am going to ask if it can be put up in the community center.
No, the front is not puffy. The side I slip stitched on was actually the front because I had slip stiched the squares together back to back. When I slip stitched the squares together it made the squares smaller and it pushed the square up on the other side or what looks like the front. It's not soft if that's what you mean by puffy. It's not like when you put 2 or 3 strands of yarn together and crochet - that's puffy - but it is pushed up from the other side. Thanks for asking Spoula

I haven't decided what border to put on it. What do you think? Any suggestions?
