    Hi Maggs,
On Round 16 you have 36 sts. Round 17 you skip 4 dc's which makes it 36 sts. (from rnd. 16) minus the 4 dc's that you skip in rnd. 17 makes it 32 dc's at the end of rnd. 17.

When you crochet you work from right to left so the end of rnd 17 is the beginning of rnd 18. The 20 dc's at the end of rnd 17 and you turn after a sl st. The first stitches you go into on rnd 18 are the last sts of rnd 17. So if you figure on rnd 18 you dc 12 twice - 24 sts. which are the last 20 dc's plus the 4 dc's that were skipped in rnd 17. Now that brings you up to the chain 10 (on rnd. 17 reading rnd 17 backwards cause you're on rnd 18) The chain 10 plus the 12 dc's at beginning of rnd. 17 = 22 sts. On rnd. 18 - 12 dc and 12 dc is 24 sts plus the 20 dc's is 44 sts

I'll have to look at this tomorrow. I have to/need to go to bed. Good night.

I'm trying it out. I did a magic ring and chained 1 for the ring then I chained 3 and did 35 dc's counting the chain 3 as 1 dc. (rnd.16) i just did the next rnd.-rnd. 17 and the first 12 dc's on rnd. 18 (my 3rd rnd. cuse I started w/rnd. 16) That brings you up to the chain you did in rnd. 17. For the 2nd set of 12 dc's on rnd. 18 I did 12 dc's around the chain. I had 20 sts left. It worked out. I did the 20 dc's and sl st to join. i'm not sure how it worked but it worked.

    Hi,maggs! I think I can help. Rnd 17- Ch1,12 dc,do 10 chains,skip 4 dc,20 dc. This is the end of the round. You have 32 dc.
Rnd 18-Ch 1,12 dc,then 12 dc over the chain from previous rnd,20dc. End of round. You have 44 dc. The chain makes a slit or opening. imalefty
