Just a wee question. I always wondered why so many winter hat designs have heavy gathers at the top instead of (much nicer and better-fitting) making a bowl-like circle up to a point, then working even (in your stitches of choice) until the hat is as long as you want. Your head doesn't fit into those gathers, what is the point? That kind of cap always slips off my head.

Just asking. I am always curious as to why things are designed the way they are.

I just whipped up a winter cap for myself, my own design (such as it is), stuck a pom pom at the top to cover that little hole, and Bob's yer uncle. I started with someone's pattern but changed it drastically. One strange thing about that pattern is that the final round is - wait for it - slip stitches. Of course they don't stretch and you can't get the thing over your head. So much for free patterns off the internet! You get what you pay for in quite a few cases.
