    yarn label question

HI. Does a person have to go by the fiber content on a pattern and yarn labels?

    What do you think?

I think most people find that using the same yarn as the pattern states gives you a result closest to what the pattern sample shows. Substituting yarn can be done, but it can be a little tricky. For example, all #4 weight yarns are not exactly the same weight, which can cause problems. Also, 100% acrylic/synthetic yarns don't block that well - if a pattern calls for a blend or 100% natural yarns and needs to be blocked after completion, it would be best to go with a blend/natural yarn for the best outcome. In short, you don't HAVE to go with what the pattern states, but I'd definitely do a swatch of my yarn selection first to see if it would still work with the pattern.

I totally agree with Nova55. Personally I haven't blocked anything in years. I stay with acrylic yarns as much as possible. Will also add that very soft yarns tend to work up smaller. Happy Stitching!
