Hi Maria! Reading patterns has been an issue for me too. I seem to do better following tutorial videos on youtube. Are you making sure to count your stitches in each row? I've always had the same problem until I started marking my ending and beginning stitches in each row to help me keep count.
What kind of stitches in your blankets have you made so far?
Granny stitches like the huge granny square, granny chain, or granny corner to corner might be a great start for you. Basically anything granny related. Lol. They work up quickly and there's minimal counting. It's always three double crochets together.
