    # of chains to start afghan

I'm new to crochet. I was given a pattern that starts:
14 stitches +6 stitches. How do I calculate how many stiches to make my starting chain? I want the afghan to be 48 inches wide. HELP!

    Hi guiding light,
Welcome to C.T. If I'm reading it right you can chain 14 + chain 6 as many times as you want to. The 6 added to the 14 = (20 chains) is so you have enough chains.

Someone else on here might know more about this.

I think you need to chain a multiple of 14. Then when the chain is as long as you want, you will add the extra 6 chains. Good luck!

Yep, just keep doing multiples of 14 (14, 28, 42, 56, etc.) until you get to the length you want, then add 6 more. Good luck and have fun.

yes that's right make the base chain as long as you like by multiples of 14 then add 6 at the end. When you turn your work you will probably have to sk 6. hope that helps.
