how do you join your granny squares?

I'm trying to get some ideas of how to join granny squares. What method have you used that works? I have googled this and see many ideas but I want to know from people who have tried a method and that it actually works and the afghan stays together. Any help from you professionals would be wonderful!

I'm not a professional but when joining pieces I try to find the yarn in each stitch on the edge of both squares/pieces that I'm joining. If I can't find the yarn in the stitch then I put the needle through another piece of yarn to join pieces together. This way the yarn (that you use to join the pieces) is invisible.
