this yarn is making me angry!

I have what I thought was a really nice yarn, got 2 bags 454g each of mill ends. It is sort of a boucle type in soft pink and blue, acrylic, I think. I planned to make myself a poncho, tried crocheting first with large hook but it was way too bulky. Frogged that and tried knitting the Orvis poncho from Amyknits on Knitting Paradise. Finished and tried it on and the sides flared straight out. Now what? Maybe buttons to hold the sides around the wrists or another trip to the frog pond? Help please! What can I do with this yarn?

Try blocking it, or try taming it in the washer and dryer if it is made from Acrylic fibers.

Try gently washing with hair conditioner, it relaxes and softens the yarn. Then dry flat on a towel, shaping it into place.
