    good memories from your childhood

Wanted something fun to make us all smile. We used to plant and pick beans and pickles for the the canning factories. Money was tight and we used it for money for school clothes. Mom would hook a hose to the kitchen faucet and the hose would stick out the window and fill the barrel beneath and we would water the plants bucket by bucket. But after we got paid we went to the A and W and got a cone or a rootbeer--if the check was a good one we could get both. That was so neat.

When the beans got old you could open them and the beans inside were pretty --they made the my dirt cakes look beautiful. Please share your memories --more than once if you like.

Our family would travel to Utah from Arizona every summer. Every year our car would break down on the way back. I thought that was normal and didn't realize that it doesn't happen to everyone, just to my family because my dad didn't have reliable transportation! We would count the cars trying to pass us on the winding roads and wave to the passing cars! there were 10 of us children in a volkswagan bus.

This is so interesting. I dont have a lot of memory of mine, bits 'N' pieces. My Daddy and I and 1 Brother helped make a skating rink in back yard where if we had a car would be the garage. I usually got wet. Skating helped me learn to skate well & danced with my Daddie. I would also help can Peache's a neighbor gave us every year to can. Yes I had to put them in that Hot water &
never got burned. I was my ddies girl o when it was time to go to Iowa from our home(Minnesota) to get margarine & it came with coloring you had to mix in before you used, was a lot cheaper then allready mixed. Susan2014

I remember that butter that has food coloring with it. Don't know why Mom bought that because we lived on a Dairy Farm. Homemade Butter is so much better than store bought. Wish I could find someone with cows where I could get some fresh butter.

At my age it is hard for me to remember that far back. Mostly I remember Christmas. Mom and Daddy never put the tree up until after all of us kids went to bed. When we woke up, not only did Santa bring us toys but he also brought the tree and decorated it. It was really exciting because Christmas and Easter were the only times we would get candy. We always had an orange, apple, some hard candy, and Mom always made Popcorn Balls. Then she made old fashion fudge and Divinity. They always made Christmas special, even if we didn't get a lot. usually Christmas was when we got new clothes. I think we enjoyed Christmas more because we didn't get stuff all year long.

Thanks ladies for sharing. On Christmas Eve we had the childrens program at church and when it was over we would get a big paper bag filled with nuts in the shell--apple--orange-tangerine--a little candy--popcorn ball. One year when I was in second grade--I had a stiff light blue dress with white polka dots on it. My sister kept motioning to me when I was up front saying my part and singing songs. I thought I will not look at her--she is trying to make me laugh-- and I am going to be good. I looked to the side where the minister was laughing---no one from the congregation could see him. Here my dress was up in the back and everyone could she my panties.

I remember my great grandfather walking me down to the main street through town when the circus came to town, since he only lived 4 houses away from it. He would pick me up on his shoulders and I would watch the circus go by then after they set up at the fairgrounds which was also just down the street from him in the other direction he would take me to the circus. I also remember my step grandfather making my grandma get her purse just so he could take us to get me a new red wagon because I outgrew my other one. One Christmas he bought me a remote control car volkswagon and it would not work so he went all over town till he found me a red volkswagon remote control car. He did the same for Good and Plenty candy and candy cigarettes. He would go all over town till he found them for me. He would take me sledding and ice skating and would throw the ball with me over the garage roof. After his dogs passed he made the dog pen into a roller skating area for me . He had emphasema but he still did all that with me. I had two of the most wonderful grandfathers a girl could ever have. I did not have a dad because my mom and dad divorced when I was a baby so instead of just one dad like most kids had I had 2 of them.

Oh Susie Ann I can imagine how embarrassed you were. It is funny when you think back on it. I can remember when I was in the eighth grade,my school once a month had a dance for the junior high and high scool. I remember I was sitting in this chair and this boy I really liked came up and ask me to dance, after we dance he escorted me back to my chair and when I turn to sit down I missed the chair and fell on the floor. I could have died of embarrassment.

Thanks ladies for making me smile. That was wonderful about the grandfathers--they were both dead before I was born. I think that was one of the reasons I enjoy being a grandparent so much--I want to make them feel special. They are little for such a short time and life is hard and they need to know they are loved. All of your stories are very special. Dont be afraid to share more--if you start remembering things. God Bless
