Two questions re crochet potholders:
1) Are they able to sustain heat so you won't get burned, or are they just for decoration?
2)How do you insulate them to make them kinda heat resistant?

I really think they are more of a decoration but I know if you go to a good fabric store they have heat resistant fabric on the roll you can sew and line the inside/outside but it would not protect the yarn outside. So you would have to investigate the yarn. I just saw someone ask for this pattern and just came across it and thought maybe she is still looking for it as I did not see a reply for it.

The antique pattern library has some wonderful potholders from the 40's.

Potholders made from cotton yarn (Peaches n Cream, Hobby Lobby brand, etc.) withstand the heat from pots/bowls and if it has double layers, they are fine for picking up a hot skillet or pan. I use them every time I cook and they last for years. They are also washable and the colors hold up pretty good. If they are made from thread, I would use them for decoration since they aren't as sturdy as the cotton ones. For insulation, I have one with a discarded/obsolete CD inserted in the middle. I haven't washed it yet, so no recommendations on that.
